- Abstract
- Delfini del ponente APS gathers together people of different ages, academic backgrounds and expertise, however, we all have a common purpose: Identify Important Natural Areas and promote their protection. We are also relentlessly committed to sharing our naturalistic discoveries to inform people about the rich biodiversity of Western Liguria and to emphasize the importance of preserving it. We have created the association with the primary purpose of carrying on the study of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in coastal waters ranging from Capo Noli (Sv) to the state border with France (Im), started in 2018 as a pilot project. During all seasons, we researchers, assisted by interns who work alongside us to learn the techniques of monitoring cetaceans and marine fauna, carry out around 10 outings a month on board a dinghy based in Imperia. In each outing we collect meteorological data, nautical traffic and human activities at sea, and at the same time we look for cetaceans, sea birds, sea turtles and other fauna through the use of binoculars. If sighted, the animals are approached with the aim of estimating the number of organisms present, some behaviours, the composition of the group. When we meet bottlenose dolphins, the main activity is to photo-identify the dolphins by means of photos of the dorsal fin of each single individual. In fact, this can be considered a sort of 'fingerprint' that allows you to recognize the animals, follow them over time, learn about their history and interactions with other bottlenose dolphins or with human activities. It may seem strange to the inattentive observer, but there are not only seagulls in the sea! Among the many species, some sedentary, others migratory, which can be encountered in Western Liguria, we find greater shearwaters ( Calonectris diomedea ), lesser shearwaters ( Puffinus yelkouan ), lowland gannets ( Morus bassanus ), terns ( Thalasseus sandvicensis) to name a few.
